Tesla Powerwall 3 vs GivEnergy All-in-One: which is right for you?

My Energy Expert·1 May 2025·8 min read

The Tesla Powerwall 3 and GivEnergy All-in-One are the two batteries we see quoted most frequently for UK homes. Both are excellent products — but they suit different buyers. Here's a direct comparison.

At a glance

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is a 13.5kWh AC-coupled battery with an integrated solar inverter, designed as a single-unit whole-home energy system. Installed price is typically £8,500–£10,500 depending on complexity. It is the gold standard for backup power and smart tariff integration, particularly with Octopus Energy.

The GivEnergy All-in-One (AIO) is a hybrid inverter and battery combined in a single unit, available in 9.5kWh and larger configurations. Installed price is typically £5,500–£7,000. It is the best value complete solar-battery hybrid system in the UK market and has a strong reputation for reliability and customer support.

Capacity and power output

The Powerwall 3 offers 13.5kWh usable capacity and an impressive 11.5kW continuous power output — enough to run almost any home appliance simultaneously, including high-load devices like a heat pump and an EV charger at the same time. This high output is what enables its whole-home backup capability.

The GivEnergy AIO 9.5 offers 9.5kWh usable capacity and 3.6kW continuous output. This is sufficient for most household loads but won't simultaneously power high-draw appliances. GivEnergy's expandable architecture means you can add additional battery modules later, and the AIO is available in larger configurations.

Backup power

Whole-home backup is where the Powerwall 3 clearly leads. It provides seamless switchover in milliseconds when the grid fails, maintaining power to your entire home. This is a genuine differentiator for anyone who loses power frequently or runs medical equipment at home.

GivEnergy's AIO provides backup power too, but typically to a defined backup circuit rather than the whole home. It requires a separate backup distribution board or changeover switch, adding installation complexity and cost. For most users who just want to keep the essentials running during an outage, it works well — but whole-home seamless backup requires the Powerwall 3.

Smart tariff and solar integration

Both batteries integrate well with UK time-of-use tariffs, but the Powerwall 3 has a particularly deep integration with Octopus Energy's Intelligent Octopus tariff — Octopus can directly control the battery's charging schedule, automatically optimising for the cheapest slots. This requires no manual setup and just works.

GivEnergy has its own cloud platform (GivEnergy Cloud) with smart charging schedules and, more recently, direct integrations with Octopus Agile via third-party apps like GivTCP. This is slightly less seamless than Powerwall's native Octopus integration but is highly configurable for technical users.

Price and value

The GivEnergy AIO is substantially cheaper — typically £2,000–£3,500 less than a Powerwall 3 for a comparable installation. For buyers who don't need whole-home backup and are primarily focused on solar self-consumption and tariff arbitrage, the GivEnergy delivers comparable financial returns at significantly lower cost.

The Powerwall 3 commands a premium that is justified if whole-home backup is important to you, if you want the simplest possible smart tariff integration, or if you value the Tesla app and ecosystem. It's a premium product at a premium price — but for the right buyer, the additional cost is well spent.

Our verdict

Choose the Tesla Powerwall 3 if: backup power is important, you're on Intelligent Octopus or planning to switch, you want a single-unit solution with minimal ongoing management, or budget is not the primary constraint.

Choose the GivEnergy All-in-One if: you want the best value complete solar-battery system, you're comfortable with slightly more configuration, whole-home backup is not essential, or you want a system you can expand modularly over time. Both carry 10-year warranties and are backed by established UK service networks.
