How My Energy Expert works
From your first question to your first solar panel — the full process, our MCS verification model, and exactly how we make money (and why that aligns with your interests).
Step by step
Your journey from request to installation
Our comparison tool takes about 3 minutes to complete. Here's what each step does and why we ask for it.
Step 01
Tell us what you're interested in
Solar panels, battery storage, or both? We'll tailor everything from installer matching to your quote to what you actually need — not just what's most profitable for us to sell.
Step 02
Tell us about your property
Postcode, property type, roof direction, and any shading. This lets us calculate realistic yield estimates and filter for installers who cover your area and property type.
Step 03
Tell us about your energy use
Monthly electricity bill, whether you have an EV or existing solar. This data shapes the system size recommendations installers will use when building your quote.
Step 04
Your contact details
Name, email, and phone number so installers can reach you. We never share your data with more than 3 installers, and we never sell it to third parties outside the matching process.
Step 05
We match and you compare
Our algorithm finds up to 3 MCS-certified installers in your area who cover your technology needs and postcode. Each contacts you within 2 working days with a tailored, no-obligation quote.
Quality guarantee
MCS certification — why every installer on our platform must hold it
What is MCS certification?
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is a government-recognised quality standard for small-scale renewable energy installations in the UK. Every installer on our platform holds a current MCS certificate — we verify this before approving any installer to receive leads.
Why it matters for you
An MCS-certified installation is a legal requirement to claim the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — the government scheme that pays you for surplus electricity you export to the grid. It is also required to access most home energy grants and finance schemes.
Why it matters for our model
MCS certification produces a unique, traceable certificate number for every installation. We use this as the trigger for our commission — if there's no MCS certificate, there's no commission. This eliminates any incentive for us to recommend unsuitable or unqualified installers.
Full transparency
How we make money — and why it benefits you
Our affiliate commission model is deliberately structured so that we only profit when you complete a successful installation. Here's exactly how it works.
| When we earn | Only when an MCS-certified installation is completed |
| What triggers payment | The installer provides the MCS certificate number — a legally mandated document issued for every qualifying installation |
| Commission rate | 3–8% of installation value, agreed with each installer upfront |
| Who pays | The installer — never the homeowner. Our service is completely free to you |
| Attribution window | 12 months from your quote request. Installations must complete within this period to be commissionable |
| Max installers per lead | 3. We never shotgun your details across dozens of companies |
Why this matters: Because we don't earn anything until an MCS certificate is issued, we have a strong incentive to match you with installers who actually complete quality jobs — not just installers who are willing to pay us upfront. Bad installers don't produce MCS certificates. We don't recommend bad installers.
What happens after installation
MCS certificate issued
Your MCS-certified installer issues a unique certificate number for your installation — a legal requirement for any qualifying renewable energy system.
Smart Export Guarantee
With an MCS certificate in hand, you can register with your energy supplier for SEG payments — earning money for every unit of surplus electricity you export.
Monitor your savings
Most modern inverters include a monitoring app so you can track generation, self-consumption, and export in real time. We recommend reviewing against your energy bills quarterly.
