Compare Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) rates

With solar panels you can sell surplus electricity back to the grid. Each supplier sets its own export rate, so the tariff you choose makes a real difference to what you earn. Compare the main UK SEG tariffs and estimate your yearly earnings below.

2,000 kWh

A typical 4kW system without a battery exports roughly 2,000 kWh a year. Not sure? Use our solar estimator to estimate yours.

Octopus Energy · Intelligent Flux
Highest peak rate. Requires a compatible home battery and an Octopus import tariff. Rate varies by half-hour.
Octopus Energy · Flux
Time-of-use export with higher evening-peak rates. Requires an Octopus import tariff.
Good Energy · Solar Savings Exclusive
Premium flat rate for systems bought through Good Energy's approved install route.
EDF · Export Exclusive (12m)
Premium flat rate; tied to an EDF import tariff and/or EDF-arranged installation.
E.ON Next · Export Exclusive
Higher flat rate available to E.ON Next import customers.
British Gas · Export & Earn Plus
Flat rate for British Gas import customers.
Good Energy · Export
Strong flat rate available without switching your import supplier.
Fuse Energy · Export
One of the best flat rates open to everyone, and you keep your existing import tariff.
Octopus Energy · Outgoing Fixed
Widely used flat rate, open to all. Reduced from 15p in March 2026.
Octopus Energy · Agile Outgoing
Half-hourly rate that follows wholesale prices. It can beat fixed rates at peak demand, but varies and can be low at midday.

Rates correct as of June 2026and shown for guidance only. Suppliers can change SEG rates with around 30 days' notice, and eligibility conditions vary. Estimated earnings are a simple illustration (your export volume × the flat rate) and assume you qualify for the tariff; time-of-use and tracker tariffs depend on when you export. Always confirm the live rate and terms directly with the supplier before switching. My Energy Expert is not an energy supplier and does not arrange export tariffs.

How the Smart Export Guarantee works

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires larger energy suppliers to pay you for electricity your solar panels export to the grid. You're paid per kWh exported, at a rate each supplier sets itself. That's why the same exported energy can earn very different amounts depending on the tariff you're on.

To qualify you'll need a smart meter that can send half-hourly export readings, and a valid MCS certificate(or Flexi-Orb equivalent) for your installation. That's one more reason it pays to use an MCS-certified installer: without the certificate, most suppliers won't pay you SEG at all.

Thinking about solar or a battery?

A good export tariff is only worth as much as the system generating the surplus. Get matched with up to 3 vetted, MCS-certified installers and compare quotes. Free, no obligation.

SEG questions, answered

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK government scheme that requires larger energy suppliers to pay solar panel owners for surplus electricity they export to the grid. Each supplier sets its own SEG rate and tariff terms, so the amount you earn per exported kWh varies widely between suppliers.

Do I have to buy my electricity from the same supplier I sell exports to?

Not always. Some SEG export tariffs are open to everyone, so you can keep a cheap import tariff with one supplier and sell your exports to another. However, the highest flat rates and time-of-use tariffs (such as Octopus Flux) usually require you to also take that supplier's import tariff.

What do I need to qualify for SEG payments?

You need a smart meter capable of half-hourly export readings, and a valid MCS certificate (or Flexi-Orb equivalent) for your solar installation. This is one reason it matters that your panels are fitted by an MCS-certified installer. Without that certificate most suppliers won't pay you SEG.

Can I still get SEG payments if I have a battery?

Yes. You can receive SEG payments with a battery, provided the exported electricity originated from your MCS-certified solar panels rather than from the grid. Some of the highest export rates, such as Octopus Intelligent Flux, are specifically designed for homes with a compatible battery.

Are flat or variable SEG rates better?

A flat rate pays the same per kWh whenever you export, which is simple and predictable. Variable or time-of-use rates pay more at peak demand times but less at midday when most solar is exported. They tend to suit homes with a battery that can hold energy back and export during peak periods.
